"I Didn't Even Know You Could Hire Someone to Clean the Outside of Your House"

One of the most surprising things I've discovered since starting Under Pressure Power Washing isn't how dirty homes can get—it's how many homeowners don't realize that professional exterior cleaning is even a service they can hire.

I can't count the number of times I've heard someone say:

"Wait, people actually hire someone to wash their house?"

Or:

"I never even thought about cleaning the outside of my home."

And honestly, I understand why.

For most people, exterior cleaning simply isn't something they think about. We clean our kitchens, vacuum our floors, wash our windows, and maintain our yards, but the exterior of our homes often gets overlooked. It's not because homeowners don't care about their property—it's because many don't realize that algae, mould, mildew, dirt, and organic growth can be safely and professionally removed.

Since launching Under Pressure Power Washing, I've had countless conversations with homeowners throughout Norfolk County who have looked at their siding, roof, driveway, or patio and assumed that discoloration, green staining, or black streaks were simply a normal part of aging.

The truth is, they're usually not.

"I Thought My House Was Just Getting Old"

One of the most common comments I hear is:

"I thought the siding was just faded."

In reality, what many homeowners believe is fading is often years of accumulated algae, mildew, dirt, pollen, and environmental staining. After a professional soft wash, homeowners are often amazed to see colours they haven't seen in years.

The same thing happens with roofs.

Many people assume those black streaks on their shingles are dirt or signs of an old roof. In most cases, they're actually caused by a type of airborne algae called Gloeocapsa magma. This algae feeds on the limestone filler found in asphalt shingles and slowly spreads over time, creating those familiar black streaks seen on homes throughout our area.

The good news? In most cases, it can be safely removed without damaging the roof.

Pressure Washing Isn't Just Pressure Washing

Another thing I quickly learned is that most people don't realize there are actually different methods of exterior cleaning.

At Under Pressure Power Washing, we offer:

Pressure Washing

This is ideal for hard surfaces such as concrete driveways, walkways, patios, and certain masonry surfaces where higher pressure is both safe and effective.

Soft Washing

Soft washing uses low pressure combined with specialized cleaning solutions to safely clean delicate surfaces such as vinyl siding, roofs, stucco, soffits, and gutters. It removes algae, mould, mildew, and bacteria without the risk of damage caused by excessive pressure.

Hot Water Washing

For commercial properties, equipment, heavy grease, and stubborn organic buildup, hot water cleaning provides a deeper level of cleaning that cold water alone simply can't achieve.

Most homeowners are surprised to learn that professional exterior cleaning isn't about blasting everything with high pressure. In fact, some of the most effective cleaning methods use very little pressure at all.

Your Home Is Constantly Under Attack

Living in Norfolk County means dealing with humidity, changing seasons, tree coverage, pollen, algae, and airborne contaminants.

Over time, these create:

  • Green staining on siding

  • Black streaks on roofs

  • Slippery algae on walkways

  • Mildew buildup on soffits and gutters

  • Organic staining on concrete and patios

  • Dirt and grime accumulation on exterior surfaces

Because this buildup happens gradually, many homeowners don't notice it until they see a neighbour's home cleaned—or until they see before-and-after photos.

Then suddenly they realize:

"Wow, my house actually needs that too."

Exterior Cleaning Is Really About Home Maintenance

One thing I always tell customers is that professional exterior cleaning isn't just about making a home look nicer.

It's about:

  • Protecting exterior surfaces

  • Preventing premature deterioration

  • Improving curb appeal

  • Maintaining property value

  • Creating a healthier environment around the home

  • Helping homeowners avoid more costly repairs in the future

Just as we service our vehicles and maintain our lawns, the exterior of our homes requires periodic maintenance as well.

The Conversation I Hear Most Often

After a cleaning is complete, the comment I hear most frequently isn't:

"Wow, that looks amazing."

Although I hear that a lot too.

The comment I hear most often is:

"I wish I had known about this years ago."

And that's exactly why I enjoy what I do.

Starting Under Pressure Power Washing has taught me that many homeowners aren't ignoring their homes—they simply don't know that professional exterior cleaning exists, what it can accomplish, or how affordable it can be.

So if you've ever looked at your siding, roof, driveway, or patio and thought "I didn't know hiring someone to clean the outside of my house was a thing", you're definitely not alone.

In fact, that's probably the most common thing I hear.
